Nugget's sire, Balcormo Sir Duncan, is a son of Mountain Pearl, one of the most influential Irish Draught stallions. Mountain Pearl was a horse of exceptional athleticism with superb, people oriented temperament. He was foaled in 1989 in County Cork, Ireland and passed performance testing by the Irish Horse Board in 1993. Imported to the US in late 1997, he stood at stud with Fox Hollow Sport Horses through April 2007 until he returned to Ireland.

Nugget's damsire, Scrapman, was noted in his inspection as "display[ing] a good walk and very good powerful trot with excellent impulsion and balance. He showed very good length of stride in canter combined with good impulsion and balance.” At only 5 years old and a short time competing, he accumulated 93 SJI points and an unrivalled 8 double clear showjumping rounds at 1.20. At nine years of age, Scrapman became Ireland's top Irish Draught stallion and was later exported to Mexico to become a foundation sire for their sport breeding program.

Nugget comes from the female family of the great ID stallion Gortfree Hero, who is a grade A showjumper at 1.30m and was twice champion Irish Draught stallion at the Royal Dublin Show, and received Two Gold merits from HSI for his own performance.

All foals are eligible to register with IDHSNA and to be inspected for approval into the breeding book, regardless of mare's breed or registration status.

Nugget's color profile is "Ee Aa nCr", with no grey gene. This means, depending on the mare, he can throw the following colors:

Bay
Chestnut
Buckskin
Palomino
Black or smokey black
If the mare carries a dilute (Cr) gene, there is also the possibility for a perlino or cremello foal

The cream gene in Irish Draughts historically comes from a single mare, Killawalla Blondie, and should not be confused with the dun gene, which is a separate gene and produces either dun (on a bay base) or red dun (on a chestnut base) but cannot produce palomino.

In Ireland, all dilute colored horses tend to be called dun, regardless of genetic distinction.

Nugget was inspected by the Irish Draught Horse Society of North America (IDHSNA) in Fall 2024 and awarded Class 1 for his outstanding characteristics and traditional Irish type. Inspectors noted his short cannon bones and strong forearm, flat square knees, short back, depth of girth and powerful hindquarters as strong examples of the breed standard, and especially enjoyed his endearing personality. As far as we're aware, this currently makes Nugget the only Class 1 Irish Draught stallion carrying the cream gene in North America, and possibly the world.

All progeny can be registered with the IDHSNA. For non-Irish Draught mares, regardless of breed or registration status, foals will receive IDSH classification, and are eligible for inspection into the Irish Draught breeding book.
